Giants
Stadium By
Seth Taylor
If you are considering a
trip to Giants Stadium (The Meadowlands) in East Rutherford, New Jersey, you have
quite a
treat in store. This stadium, which is home to the New York
Giants and the New York Jets, has a rich history. This is the
ninth-oldest stadium used by NFL teams. It also
claims
the title as the second largest NFL stadium.
Opened in October of 1976, the first game was
played
by
the Giants, who lost to the Dallas Cowboys. The Jets did not
share the stadium with the Giants until 1984.
Although,
the Jets began to share Giants stadium with the New York Giants the
name
of the stadium did not change. The New York Giants had to
approve
the change of the name under the terms of the stadium lease and they
denied the name change.
Understandably,
the New York
Jets do not refer to their stadium as Giants stadium. They
refer to it as The
Meadowlands.
This is also the case with
the NFL and information refering to New York Jets home games.
Due
to the
shared occupancy, the stadium claims the location for hosting more NFL
games than any other stadium. Giants
stadium has a seating capacity of
80,242. The playing surface has changed several times over
the years, and for different games. It now has an artificial
surface called FieldTurf that was implemented in 2003.
The
suites available include
- Executive Suites
- Single
Event Suite Rents
- Giants Stadium Party Suite
These
rooms can accommodate
parties anywhere from 22 up to 1,000, with full food service from
Aramark included. For details on pricing and availability, it
is necessary to contact the stadium management.
So,
now that you have decided you must go see this for yourself, be
prepared ahead of time to get in. Security measures request
that you allow time to be cleared for entry, so budget your time
accordingly.
To get to the
stadium, map
directions to 50
Stadium Road, East Rutherford, NJ. Find the easiest way from
your location to get in; all directions are marked with signs pointing
out the route.
Parking is
$10.00, with
lots adjacent to the stadium. You will not be allowed to take
bottles, cans, coolers or video cameras inside. Any children
over 12 months are required to have a ticket. If
you wish to visit Giants Stadium (The Meadowlands), you may want to do that as soon as
possible. It is scheduled to be demolished
and replaced with the New Meadowlands Stadium in 2010.
This
open air stadium will seat 82,000 people, and come with 217 luxury
suites with amenities that include comfortable seating with a choice of
couches or armchairs. Flat panel televisions will be
available, and the food will include sushi and carving
stations. Those in the suites will also have reserved parking.
With
the new stadium, expect higher ticket prices to offset the
cost. The builders are looking for corporate sponsors, but
this stadium comes with an estimated price tag of over $1.4
billion, making it the most expensive stadium in the NFL surpassing the
Dallas Cowboys new $1 billion stadium.
PSL
seats are going to be available, and as the plans get further along
there will be answers for the new questions arising, such as parking.
Whether
you make it to the old stadium or the new one in 2010, enjoy the piece
of history and unique qualities of the Giants Stadium that has housed
not only NFL events, but soccer events, one of the largest masses ever,
and many other cultural events.
